Linden High School, Linden
Owen McGrattan has learned strength through trial and tribulation. Following a tragedy that left him and his brother orphaned, Owen had to find a way to adjust to a new life in a new home with a new family. He found continuity in his Japanese heritage, and drew strength from his grandparents’ experience in the World War II internment camps.
One powerful source of continuity is his grandfather’s, his mother’s and his own love for baseball. Playing on the team for four years, and serving as captain for two, Owen leads by example. Working with younger players during weekend clinics, helping them learn the nuances of the game, Owen takes pains to impart life lessons while developing their baseball skills. Owen has taken an experience that would break many people, and strives to find the positive – and to lead from that position – every day.
